Cocoa is located in Brevard County, situated on the edge of the Indian River Lagoon with a total area of 15.4 square miles, 13.3 square miles and of it is land and 2.1 square miles of it is water. Tucked away amidst the tree-lined avenues of nostalgic riverside is historic Cocoa. Cocoa’s downtown Cocoa Village is a charming cornucopia of unique shops and some of Florida’s best gourmet restaurants.

With a playground for the kids at Taylor Park and a Gazebo used by farmers markets and jazz bands, this is a great area for the entire family. Featuring year-round special events, street celebrations, and parties such as the famous Holiday Art & Craft Fair the first weekend in December with over 250 exhibitors and July 4th celebration. Many art galleries are interspersed throughout the Village; feel free to enter their studios and enjoy their creations as they work. Every Wednesday, the Farmer’s Market is held at the Gazebo offering local farm-fresh fruit and vegetables. Every Friday, the Gazebo offers a free lunchtime jazz concert, a perfect outdoor venue. Cocoa has a multitude of antique shops, art galleries, boutiques, and specialty stores. Over a dozen restaurants serve everything from homemade ice cream and pizza to gourmet French cuisine.

Cocoa History

The S.F. Travis Hardware store opened in 1885 and is still in business. The city was chartered in 1895 and by 1930, the population had risen to 2200  after a number of historic setbacks, namely a “Great Freeze” in 1903 and The Great Depression. The population rose dramatically following the development of the space industry quadrupling by 1960. In 1964, the Cocoa Expo Sports Center (Cocoa Stadium) was built for the Cold 45s spring baseball training and Grapefruit League games. The team later became the Houston Astros. Cocoa High School has numerous state champion, athletic teams. In 2015, the Cocoa High School football team was ranked 1st in the State of Florida and 13th in the country and was on a 35 game winning streak against other Brevard County schools.

Cocoa’s population count was approximately 17,400 in 2014. As of the census of 2000, there were 16,412 people, 6,939 households, and 4,232 families residing in the city.
