Merritt Island

Merritt Island is Florida’s largest island and a self-contained unincorporated town. Merritt Island is actually a peninsula, connected to the mainland by the Crawlerway. NASA, to help move vehicles to the launch pad near Banana Creek, constructed this rocky road. Despite this land bridge, Merritt Island is still considered a natural island and is only accessible by several causeways and the Crawlerway. These causeways provide easy access from Melbourne to the south and Titusville and Cocoa to the north.

Living in Merritt Island, FL

NASA, the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and the Merritt Island Airport mostly support the Merritt Island economy. These locations include fabrication centers and other industrial sites. These, in addition to an Air Liquide plant, employ the majority of Merritt Island’s population. While NASA has been downsized in recent years, the Kennedy Space center still functions as a major tourist attraction.

Merritt Island has its own school system, including a range of public schools in addition to a few private Christian schools. It also includes the Merritt Island Public Library, which is a member of the Brevard County Library System. While much of Florida has been developed and is now characterized by highways, piers, and cityscapes, many of the back roads run through beautiful, undeveloped natural areas. One such area is the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge. This 140,000-acre area was set aside during the construction of the nearby shuttle launch sites as a buffer for the noise. The visitor center includes extensive information on the area, including descriptions of the plant and animal life in the area.

Visitors have the opportunity to enjoy natural fauna and sea birds, bobcats, turtles, alligators, and manatees. This is the perfect place to take a walk or go canoeing. In addition to the wildlife preserve, residents of Merritt Island can enjoy a short trip to the Atlantic Ocean. The beaches here are top notch. Most notable is Cocoa Beach, which is easily combined with a trip to the nearby Kennedy Space Center or a shopping trip to Historic Cocoa Village. The riverside community of Cocoa Village is filled with galleries, boutiques, and restaurants that will provide a memorable afternoon for the whole family.

Merritt Island Real Estate and Merritt Island Waterfront Homes for Sale

The real estate in Merritt Island is characterized by stand-alone, single-family homes. These homes include patios and balconies to enjoy the sunny Florida weather. Most of the lawns are flat and grassy and landscaping frequently includes palm trees. These homes are the picture of Florida living! The inland homes range in price from around $200,000 to $500,000.

Oceanfront properties, on the other hand, can easily sell for $1 million or more. There are also some apartments and condos available, including sub-$200,000 properties in high-rise buildings. These properties can give residents an ocean view without the oceanfront price tag.
